“I Am Memoir” is not a film that sticks closely to it’s source material. While that is it’s biggest flaw, it is also where it shines. If you ha told me two years ago that I’d gather misty-eyed watching Will Smith tell “Three Runt Birds” in a tall budget motion record I’d have laughed myself humorous, but this adaptation of Richard Mathson’s untouchable recent that -while itself being a vampire story- inspired the entire zombie film genre as we know it takes the memoir we all know whether we’ve read the book or not and turns it into an exceptionally personal affair for all of us. One man. One dog. A familiar metropolis deserted by day, but crawling with death by nightfall. This is our setting and it’s one that never gets customary for me.

The plague that wipes out Robert Neville’s world is never fully explained, simply inferred to be the result of some sort of failed cure for cancer. Gone from the original and the novel Vincent Ticket classic, The Last Man on Earth, is the long struggle of Neville to set his ill daughter, his wife’s tranformation, and the frightening actions of the US government to fill the plague. What it left is simply one man, alone trying to have his sanity and hopelessly searching for a cure to a disease that has already wiped humanity off the face of the earth and left the “survivors” as rabid vampiric horrors. It’s murky, it’s pathetic, and it’s perfectly human. Will Smith has a penchant for picking dreadful, schmaltzy films to star in, but no one can explain his talent and charisma as a leading man. Naturally, this is a film he must carry single-handedly and he does an awesome job of it; he’s dramatic, he’s relateable, and at times, he is droll. The humor is that of the sunless and dismal kind, but in a world like his, that is all there is left.

The vampires/zombies/infected in this are all CG and more than a bit reminiscent of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. I’m not a fan of these kind of effects when practical would have been more effective and was acutely aware of the fact that I watching computer-generated monsters, but they worked nonetheless. The infected display to be frightful foes for Neville to face, combining suprising cunning, inhuman strength, and impossible agility (hence the CG) . Their only weakness is that sunlight kills them almost instantly. Neville plays a game of cat-and-mouse with them, gathering supplies, researching cure, and searching for survivors by day while making clear to secure benefit to his fortified apartment before nightfall when the creatures advance out to hunt for his hiding space. More than a few shades of 28 Days Later are expose in this film, which is comic considering the book and it’s film offspring are largely what provided the elements of that film. So I guess the genre has officially near burly circle now.

Ultimately, it’s the personal touches that gain “I Am Narrative” such a treat. Bob Marley provides both the soundtrack to Robert Neville’s day and the inspiration for his work, which is both ironic and uplifting at times. This may sound unfamiliar for a anxiety flick, but if you are a fan of Marley (himself a Fable) it makes all the sense in the world as you inspect. Watching Neville attempt to interact with mannequins he’s place up as he returns the movies he rents (in alphabetical order, one at a time) and seeing him snap when one of the figures is moved is both humorous and, at times, intensely disturbing. When relief finally comes, Neville finds he has lost the ability to interact with other humans at all and is relegated to performing lines from “Shrek”, which is playing on his television at the time. The ending is a complete 180 from the book which is disappointing, but not as corny as it could have been. The current I Am Record has one of the most shiny and darkly ironic endings ever effect on paper, but director Francis Lawrence didn’t raze it by go for the pleased ending either. The result is a compromise between the pitch blackness of the book and the cloying cheese that many Will Smith fans appreciate. It turns out a bittersweet and hopeful conclsion that should satisfy both while not thrilling either. But I left the theater with “Redemption Song” calm ringing in my ears and a contented feeling. If only every movie could do that for me.

“I Am Sage” fails to adapt the book of the same name to the grand mask, but succeeds in so many other ways. I can’t give it a perfect secure, but I will give it a very hearty recommendation to fans of Will Smith, zombies, vampires, and Bob Marley. Like.

I Am Story can’t catch a pretty shake. This Will Smith-led production is the third attempt Hollywood has made to adapt the sparkling fresh. None of the adaptions have truly done the fresh justice (which is a shame), but this version has arrive the closest.

Here we have a radiant beginning; footage of a scientist (played beautifully by Emma Thompson) saying humbly that she’s discovered a arrangement to cure cancer. Snappily forward a few years, and Unique York is utterly devoid of human life, keep for Robert Neville (Will Smith) . As the first half of the film progresses, we learn about his meager living, spending the day harvesting and trying to notice a cure, even now, while spending the night huddled in his protected home as creatures prowl.

His only companion, a astounding dog named Sam, protects Neville as Neville protects him. They have a friendship based on loneliness and the human need for someone or something to believe onto. Sam is Neville’s only connection to the past and the only method to report what miniature humanity is left, either in the world or Neville himself. This period in the movie is pitch perfect, puncuated by one or two monstrous sequences that instill advantageous fright.

Unfortunately, the last half of the film deteriorates into an action movie that completely changes the meaning of the words “I Am Record.” Don’t find me disagreeable, it’s mostly done really well. Constantine director Francis Lawrence has a marvelous handle on the action and delivers some estimable scenes. But, it becomes muddled and veers off completely from the recent. My biggest complaint, though, is the utilize of CGI. Instead of using actual flesh and blood actors, all of the creatures are created with CG and they recognize incredibly fallacious when lined up next to steady people. In the beginning, it’s not a predicament but as you seek more of them (and you will) it’s glaringly determined. And annoying.

All of this I was expecting going in, though. Considering that the film was co-written by Akiva Goldsman who also wrote I, Robot, I knew this version would stray from the source material honest as I, Robot did. As a movie, it’s genuinely thrilling and creates the perfect balance of tension and action through most of its entirety. And, surprisingly, Will Smith shows that he’s a really excellent actor as he has to not only tackle many conflicting emotions during the two hour hurry time but he also has to do so without having distinguished of anyone to react to. Spending a suitable hour or so without another single actor for Will Smith to work with was a gamble and it paid off.

Your enjoyment of the film is entirely based on what you bring to the table. If you’re coming to this film expecting to gawk the book arrive to life you’ll be sorely disappointed. However, if you’re looking for a worthy action movie that actually has a genuine anecdote and a human aspect, you’ll be hard-pressed to accept one as thrilling recently.

Based on interviews with more than 500 people about the one memory they would choose to take with them to heaven, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda has modeled a uniqu blend of documentary and fiction that addresses the vagaries of memory but also what it means to make films. After Life transpires in a sort of way station where the dead must select one memory to be re-created on film and taken on with them forever, relinquishing everything else. Over the span of a week, a dedicated group of caseworkers tease out self-deceptions as well as real epiphanies from 22 different lives. An old woman remembers reuniting with her husband on a crowded bridge after World War II; a man recollects the breeze felt on a tram ride the day before summer vacation; a successful man faces his own treachery. Remembering becomes a courageous act in the casual exposition of this lovely film. –Fionn Meade

Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Cluless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet… something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm–and it’s a lot less funny as a result. Fans of the testudinate pace and art-house vibe of writer-director Sally Potter’s other works (Orlando, The Tango Lesson) will likely enjoy The Man Who Cried. Fegele (Christina Ricci) is a Russian Jew separated from her father as a child. Raised as “Susie” by an English family, she makes her way to Paris, where although the city’s multiculturalism is vibrant, the Nazis are already on the rise and the secret of her origin becomes increasingly dangerous. The cast of The Man Who Cried is excellent; Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Harry Dean Stanton all do fine jobs in what could have easily degenerated into an accentfest. Depp and Ricci do very well with minimal dialogu–both go through the entire movie almost without speaking. The film moves at a leisurely pace and is beautifully shot. Not a film to show to a roomful of action movie fans, but it’s well suited to people who like their films a little more European in flavor. –Ali Davis

Here’s something you don’t see every day. Then again, would you want to? Several years before the 1950s’ Davy Crockett craze, John Wayne donned a coonskin cap to play a militiaman in early-19th-century Alabama. He and his fellow Kentuckians are just passing through–”marching 600 miles,” as they merrily sing (and sing, and sing), because riverboat magnate John Howard has refused to haul them. Howard and all-purpose scoundrel Grant Withers are scheming to dispossess a community of French emigres–veterans of Napoleon’s Grand Army who’ve come seeking life, liberty, etc. in the New World. Howard’s also out to marry Vera Ralston, the French general’s daughter. Naturally, Wayne’s just the lad to gum up both plans.

Wayne himself produced The Fighting Kentuckian, but far from repeating the success of his maiden effort, Angel and the Badman, this is one of the feeblest films in his long career. Writer-director George Waggner never gets a handle on what a pre-Western should look and move like. Consequntly, the cast does a lot of standing around looking silly in period costume, waiting–mostly in vain–for the script to establish their connection to one another and something resembling a plot. There is a glossier look to the proceedings than most Republic pictures achieved, thanks to Lee Garmes’s pearly cinematography, but this is scant consolation. So is the almost creepy presence of Oliver Hardy, sans Laurel, doing Ollie-shtick as Wayne’s jolly sidekick. No, he doesn’t say, “This is another fine mess you’ve got me into!” But he should. –Richard T. Jameson
